摘要

Olympia oysters {Ostrea lurida) have a built-in resistance to ocean acidification (OA) during a key shell-building phase after spawning, a study hasfound. The findings of the study, published by the Oregon State University (OSU) in July, have attracted interest especially in the West Coast shellfish industry, reputed as the "aquatic canary of the coal mine" (see side bar). The Olympia oyster, which is the only native oyster in the West Coast, does not begin making its shells until two to three days after fertilization; it also makes them far more slowly, protecting them from corrosive water during the critical developmentphase, OSU project's principal investigator, Prof George Waldbusser, explained in an OSU article.
