Allerton III. Beyond livestock genomics

In 1990, the first Allerton Conference entitled "Mapping Domestic Animal Genomes: Needs and Opportunities" provided one of the first forums for scientists, producers, industry, and government representatives to assess emerging technologies for enhancing animal agriculture. The participants forwarded a recommendation to the USDA that genetic maps with markers separated by 20 cM, be developed for each of the agriculturally important species (cattle, swine, poultry, fish, and horses). These maps wouldprovide a platform for individual investigators to explore the genetics of disease resistance, reproduction, and growth traits. All participants agreed that national and international collaborative efforts were necessary to accomplish these goals and toexpedite the development of tools and reagents required for gene mapping.
