Silver-Tellurolate Polynuclear Complexes: From Isolated Cluster Units to Extended Polymer Chains

The chemistry of transition metal selenolate and tellurolate complexes is a burgeoning area of research, as exemplified by a recent review by Arnold; however, their utility in the synthesis of high nuclearity clusters remains virtually unexplored. Wehave been probing the use of bissilylated reagents E(SiMe_3)_2 (E = S, Se, Te) as a route into high nuclearity phosphane-stabi-lized copper-chalcogenide clusters. The driving force of these reactions is the generation and elimination of SiMe_3X (X = Cl,OAc) and the formation of Cu-E bonds. Attempts to extend this chemistry to silver have, however, met with little success as binary silver chalcogenides are preferentially formed and precipitate instead of molecular species (kinetically) stabilized by PR_3 ligands. We have recently shown that alkyltellurolate (TenBu) ligands do hold promise in the synthesis of Ag- Te clusters. We now report herein our initial findings on the high-yield synthesis of silver - tellurium cluster complexes using the silylatedreagent Te(Ph)SiMe_3.
