Scarcely half a year after the first isolation of solid C_(60), transition-metal complexes of fullerenes began appearing on the rapidly growing list of novel derivatives. At almost the same time, a surge of interest in bowl-shaped "fullerene fragments" spawned parallel efforts to prepare transitionmetal complexes of open geodesic polyarenes. The intriguing question regarding the preference for metal binding to the concave surface versus the convex surface was first addressed computationally by Faust and Vollhardt, and has been revisited more recently by others. Experimental evidence to support or refute these predictions has, until now, eluded investigators.
