Crystallization of uniform colloids into extended three-dimensional structures other than the trivial face-centered-cubic (fcc) lattice that resembles natural opals remains a challenge of nanomaterials synthesis.The few successful approaches have required careful balance of electrostatic interactions between nanoparticles.
