Over the last few years the development of zeolite-based catalysts for the liquid-phase oxidation of hydrocarbons has been a field of active research, and several interesting systems have been discovered. However, the selectivities of these systems intheepoxidation of olefinsmay be limited by acid-catalyzed or other side reactions. This is particularly true with Tt-β and [Mn(bpy)_2]~(2+) -NaY catalysts (bpy = 2,2'-bypridine). Furthermore, the epoxides are frequently subject to solvolysis, or largeamounts of less desirable products are formed, for example phenylacetaldehyde and benzaldehyde in the case of the oxidation of stvrene.
