Silylium ions are much more reactive than corresponding carbenium ions owing to the larger size of the silicon atom and their higher electrophilicity.In the absence of sufficient steric protection,silylium ions readily interact even with weakly nucleophilic molecules such as the perchlorate anion halocarbons alkenes,alkynes,arenes,and even hydrocarbons and noble gases.
