Organized molecular structures are central to the formation of advanced functional surfaces in the field of nanotechnol-ogy.The principles of supramolecular chemistry have recently been applied extensively to molecules adsorbed at surfaces under ultrahigh-vacuum (UHV) conditions,and complex molecular structures formed by self-assembly based on weak,reversible interactions,such as van der Waals forces,dipole-dipole interactions,hydrogen bonding,or metal com-plexation,have been revealed by using local-probe scanning tunneling microscopy (STM).
