A New Arene Synthesis-Or: How Inert Is the Cydopentadienyl Ligand?

For more than 50 years since their discovery' metal complexes containing η~5-cyclopentadienyl (C_5H_5; Cp) ligands have been investigated intensively, and since the middle of the 1970s group 4 metal complexes have attracted particular interest. This situation has arisen in part because of the discovery of the olefin-polymerization activity of these complexes when activated with MAO (methyl alumoxane), because of their frontier orbitals that are capable of the activation of small molecules, and because of the stability of the metal-ligand bond. Recently Xi and Takahashi et al.
