Intramolecular C-H Activationin Alkaline-Earth Metal Complexes

In the last decade the number of σ- and π-bonded organometallic complexes of the heavier alkaline-earth metals (Ca, Sr, Ba) has increased tremendously. Although studies on the reactivities of this group of organometallic compounds are still scarce, it is clear that they are more than just "heavy Grignard complexes". Their structural and chemical behavior has often been compared to that of early d-block and especially lanthanide organometallic compounds. The herein described observation of C-H activation in a benzylcalcium complex represents another analogy between the chemistry of alkaline-earth and early d- and f-block metals.
