The Nature of the Starter Unit for the Rapamycin Polyketide Synthase

Rapamycin. FK. 506, and FK 520 are structurally similar macrolide natural products of streptomycetes. Their potent immunosuppressant properties have stimulated great interest in their total synthesis and in the molecular basis for their biological activity. The therapeutic potential of structural analogues has also prompted research into the production of chemically modified rapamycins.
