Open-shell organic molecules have been the subject of considerable interest ever since the first report of the triphe-nylmethyl radical over 100 years ago by Gomberg.In the intervening century,the study of organic radicals has advanced from the controversial isolation of a stable,trivalent carbon molecule to the generation of polymeric polyradicals with 10000 unpaired electrons,with many variations in between.The properties of radicals that have been considered include their thermochemical stability,molecular structure,spectroscopic characteristics,chemical reactivity,and electronic structure,such as spin density and magnetic properties.
