Highly substituted dihydropyranones are key structural elements in many bioactive natural products and important pharmaceuticals,and asymmetric hetero-Diels-Alder (HDA) reactions between Danishefsky's dienes and carbonyl compounds have been shown to be the most powerful and straightforward approach to these optically active dihydropyranones.
