In recent years significant progress has been made in the design of synthetic peptide catalysts that carry out isolated chemical reactions similar to those catalyzed by enzymes,albeit with significantly lower efficiencies.An unmet challenge in the de novo design of enzymes is to engineer peptides capable of bringing about more complex,multistep synthetic processes.
