In recent years a variety of catalytically active materials has been produced by anchoring transition metal complexes on the surface of insoluble supports such as organic polymers or metal oxides in order to exploit in tandem the well-known advantagesof heterogenous and homogeneous systems. If the metal complex can be incorporated in the interlamellar region of a layered solid, the catalytic selectivity is potentially enhanced since the effect of the layers may limit absorption and reaction of substrates based on their size, shape, or polarity. The synthesis of such hybrid materials containing rhodium complexes intercalated in smectite clays has been reported, α-Zirconium phosphate Zr(HPO_4)_2-H_2O (1) represents an alternative layered solid, which has a number of advantages as a host lattice arising from the ease of synthesis of high purity material, its high exchange capacity, and chemical and thermal robustness. Crystallographic studies show that each layer consists of almost coplanar zirconium atoms bridged by tetrahedral O_3POH groups alternatively located above and below the plane.
