Recently we reported the first example of a mononuclear nitrosyl(oxo)molybdenum(II) complex, [MoL(NO)(O)(OH)] (L = 1,4,7-triisopropyl-1,4.7-triazacyclononane), in which the strong it-acceptor ligand NO and the strong pi-donor ligand O~2 ~ are bound tothe same oetai ion in a cis arrangement. This 18e complex is of the {M-NO}~4 type; the terminal Mo=O and Mo=NO bonds are short and both have double-bond character. A synergistic bonding model has been proposed in which electron density is transferred from the filled p orbitals cf the oxo ligands to the empty pi orbitais of the nitrosyl ligand thus weakening the N-O bond. We report here on an unusual organometallic variant of this class of compound.
