The European Conference on Solid-State Chemistry rotates biennially among the major European centers for solid-state chemistry. Following Zürich, Madrid, Oslo, and Stuttgart, the community got together for the 10th meeting at the University of Sheffield, which is celebrating its centenary this year. The team around Anthony West, Derek Sinclair, and Neil Hyatt organized the conference in nine oral sessions that focused on different aspects of solid-state chemistry and one poster session of almost 140 contributions. The conference counted about 200 participants, mostly from Great Britain, Germany, Russia, France, and Spain. The scientific program was opened by Sir John Meurig Thomas (University of Cambridge, UK) with a survey of his work on catalysis. He pointed out the increasing importance of developing catalysts with shape-, size-, regio-, or enantioselectivity. One of his concepts is the immobilization of homogeneous catalysts in nanoporous silica or aluminumphosphate. He demonstrated with several examples how these additional spatial restrictions increased the already existing selectivity of a catalyst or even accessed new reaction products.[1]
