Amongst the growing knowledge and understanding of the reactions of ligands with bare metal ions in the gas phase there is scanty information about reactions with sulfur, although metallapolysulfane ions are known to be formed in reactions with ethylenesulfide. While investigating the formation and structures of clusters [M_xS_y]~- generated subsequent to laser ablation of metal sulfides. we observed the formation of [MS_y]~+ ions, presumably from elemental sulfur released during laser ablation. Subsequently we discovered that there is a general reaction of M_(g)~+ with S_(8(8), to form series of metallapolysulians complexes [MS_y]~+ for most elements of the periodic table. We report here on the ions [MS_y]~+ (y =2-16) for first row transition metals, and present some results of density functional computations of the structures of major species.
