A New Method for the Synthesis of Amphipolar Phosphorus-Containing Heterocycles

Diphosphinomethanides show a rich and varied coordination behavior towards main group elements and transition metals. Oxidative coupling of these ligands with transition metals results in the formation of C—C, C-P and P—P bonds, and reduced metal complexes comprising the rearranged organo-phosphorus ligands have been isolated as intermediates. Analogous redox reactions have been reported for some mam group elements and their compounds [for example, Eq. (a)]. In these examples antimony and bismuth trichloride are reduced to afford the zerovaieru metal and 2. which contains two ylidic functions, whereas AsCl_3 yields compound 3 (arsenic bears an average oxidation state of + 0.5) in an analogous reaction. The latter compound is the first example of an intermediate containing a main aroup metal center in this type of reaction.
