Polyiodide ions of the general formula I_(2m+n)~(n-), (or I_(1+2i+2l'')~-, where i, l', and n are integers, 0 <= i, 0 < l' <= n; n is the ionic charge, l' represents an independent series of compounds with the given ionic charge, i is a compound within such a series, and m the excess iodine) are generated by the addition of m iodine molecules and n iodide ions. The number of known compounds with low or medium iodine content, particularly triiodides, is considerable: there are 329 entries in the crystallographic data bases. On the other hand, the occurrence of iodine-rich compounds, which are distinguished by diverse cross-linking patterns, as the anions I_x~- for x>3 (to date x = 8/2, 13/3, 5, 2.2/4, 12/2, 26/4, 7, 16/2, 9) is increasingly rare because of decreased stability.
