摘要

The report by L. Horner et al. in 1959 on the use of lithiated phosphune oxides to carry out carbonyl olefination further ensured a lasting legacy for organophosphorus reagents in organic synthesis. Beyond the already established Wittig and Wadswcsrth-Emmons reactions, the Horner-Wittig process allowed interception of the critical intermediate in the olefination, and therefrom, mechanistic insight and practical value. Given the importance of these reagents in modern synthesis, it is remarkable thatthe solution and solid-state structures of lithiated phosphane oxides have not been established.
