Programming and self-assembly are key concepts underlying the design of supramolecular systems. Hitherto, interest has focused on the synthesis of helicates, catenanes, knots, and cages, as well as coordination polymers. However, it is in principle possible to generate a larger variety of structures selectively by using appropriate ligands and metal ions.
