Owing to the intense interest in the silicon-based materials, the chemistry of (silyl)metals is a vigorously growing research field. In particular, an understanding of the reactivities of palladium complexes is highly desired, since palladium complexes are versatile catalysts in a number of transformations of hydro-silanes and disilanes. In these reactions, silylpalladium(IV) species are occasionally suggested to be key intermediates, based on the relevant chemistry of silylplatinum(IV) and organopalla-dium(IV) complexes. However, no unequivocal evidence that substantiates silylpalladium(IV) species has been reported to date. Accordingly, discussions about their intermediacy have usually been speculative, and elementary steps that may involve silylpalladium(IV) species have been often described simply as "metathesis". Our recent paper reporting isolation of a tetrakis(silyl)platinum(IV) complex (1) appears to imply that the chelation. rigid conformation, and small steric size of the 1,2-phenylenedisilyl ligand might be ideal for the stabilization of possible palladium(IV) complexes. Here we disclose the very first isolation and characterization of a silylpalladium(IV) complex.
