Fluoroformic acid, the monofluoro derivative of carbonic acid, is a proposed intermediate in the oxidation of fluoro-carbons and ozonolysis of fluoroalkenes. Considerable interest has been focused on its potential role in the depletion of the ozone layer in the stratosphere. Fluoroformic acid has recently been observed in the gas phase by neutralization-reionization mass spectrometry (NMRS). All attempts to prepare fluoroformic acid in solution have so far failed. According to a chemistry textbook, fluoroformic acid cannot exist in condensed phases because of its autocatalytic decomposition to HF and CO_2 [Eq. (a)].
