Ge_9~(4-): A Deltahedral Zintl Ion Now Made in the Solid-State

All known main group deltahedral clusters are made either by crystallization from solution or by direct synthesis from the elements, that is by solid-state reactions. (We exclude gaseous clusters here since they are not structurally well characterized.) Members of the first group belong to the well known class of Zintl ions and include anions of group 14 (the tetrels (Tt): Tt_9~(4-), Tt_9~(3-), Tt_5~(2-), Tt_9~(2-), and Tt_(10)~(2-)), of group 15 (the pnictogens (Pn): Pn_4~(2-), and the mixed speciesTt_2Pn_2d~(2-), Tr Tt)8~(3-), and TrTt_9~(3-) (Tr = element of group 13).
