G Proteins and Regulation of Adenylate Cyclase (Nobel Lecture)

Earl Sutherland, a Friend of my father, wrote to me in the spring of 1961 with a proposal to participate in what was then an educational adventure-a combined M.D-Ph.D. training program that he had devised at Western Reserve University (now Case Western Reserve University) in Ohio. My reaction was entiredly negativel I thanked him, politely I think, but the idea of spending seven years in Cleveland had little appeal. Happily, sutherland was persisitent. He wrote again in the fall of 1961 (the beginning of my last year in college), I decided the idea was worth a visit, and I had my first glimpse of cyclic AMP, for whose discovery, in 1957, Sutherland was later awarded the Nobel Prize (in 1971).
