Since the discovery of cryptands, in particular the [2.2.2] mac-robicyclic ligand 3, some 25 years ago by Dietrich, Lehn, and Sauvage and of the crown ethers by Pedersen an exciting new field of research named supramolecular chemistry has opened to inorganic, organic, and physical chemists. Whereas at the outset much attention was focused on the selective binding of spherical monoatomic alkali metal and alkaline-earth metal cations, very rapidly considerable achievements were reported with regard tothe recognition of molecular cations. Many aspects of supramolecular chemistry remain to be developed, for example, new materials based on self-assembly may be targeted by using weak interactions.
