Reactions in layered assemblies of organic molecules as ob-tained by the Langmuir- Blodgett (LB) technique are frequently of topochetnical nature, that is the course of the reaction and. the direction in which the product is formed are completely controlled by the packing of the starting material in the lattice. The monoiayers of which LB assemblies are composed, extend in the x,y plane: the assembly direction defines, the z axis (Fig la). All the reactions occurring in such systems can be characterized by a "dimensionality", where "dimensionality of the reaction" should be differentiated from "product dimensionality". The latter refers to the spatial structure of the product, that is for example whether a linear macromolecule or a two- or three-dimensional network is the reaction product. !n contrast the dimensionality of the reaction describes the tenson-al character of the reaction.
