Understanding assembly processes based on the linking of simple XY_n-type polyhedra has been of tremendous interdisciplinary interest since the time of Pauling's original statements referring especially to the silicates.It seems to be of importance to distinguish between self-assembly and directed-assembly,terms used for elementary processes that probably occurred on the primordial earth.
