The field of molecular machines has attracted much attention in more recent years, particularly in relation to devices at the nanometer level. Catenanes and rotaxanes occupy a central place in this field, because of the ability of these compounds to undergo large amplitude motions, such as gliding of a ring along an axis on which it is threaded or rotation of a ring within another ring or around an axle, in a reversible fashion.
