β-Amino alcohols arc slructure elements of many important peptidomimetics. Numerous compounds with this subunit were synthesized in the last few years and function as inhibitors of aspartic proteases such as renin and HIV protease. In addition to C_2-symmelric inhibitors developed by Kempf et al., hydroxyethylene isosters (HDI) have received increasing attention (Scheme 1).
