Unidirectional Solidification Process of a Binary Solution Saturating Porous Media

摘要

The solidification process of a binary solution occurs in a variety of industrial applications. In particular, the reason for the formation of "double-diffusive convection" was one of the main studied issues in the past. This study develops a modified continuum model with the assumption of local thermal equilibrium between the binary mixture and porous media. It is used to simulate the flow motion, and heat and species transport of a hypereutectic aqueous ammonium chloride (NH{sub}4Cl-H{sub}2O) solution with and without saturated glass beads added during the unidirectional solidification (UDS) process. Moreover, the results of flow visualization on the evolution of double-diffusive convection and measurement of the growth of the liquidus interface are adopted to access the accuracy of the numerical model. According to both results of experimental measurement and numerical simulation, it can be found that adding glass beads has the effect of reducing the occurrence and strength of double-diffusive convection.
