Total hip arthroplasty (THA) and hip resurfacing are both surgical procedures that can result in high patient satisfaction and significant quality-of-life improvements in patients with hip arthritis. THA can be performed with a variety of bearing surfaces, including metal-on-metal whereas hip resurfacing at this time is only performed with metal-on-metal bearing surfaces. Metal-on-metal articulations enjoyed significant popularity during the early evolution of modern THA surgery in the 1960s and 1970s. However, metal-on-metal THA fell out of favor due to unpredictable patient outcomes, implant design issues, and the excellent and highly reproducible results of metal-on-polyethylene THA popularized by Sir John Charnley [1].
