AJR teaching file: fat-containing mass in the interatrial septum.

A 78-year-old woman with nonspecific chest pain and palpitations was found to have a hyperechoic mass in the inter-atrial septum (IAS) on echocardiography. Contrast-enhanced chest CT was performed for further evaluation of the mass.Sequential axial images and a coronal reconstruction from contrast-enhanced chest CT showed a homogeneous low-attenuation nonenhancing mass involving the IAS (Fig. 1). The mass was continuous with epicardial fat and spared the fossa ovalis, appearing dumbbell shaped. The attenuation of the mass measured -100 HU, which is indicative of fat content.
