As an embroiderer and textile artist, as well as a microscopist, I love all forms of textiles and fibres. The sensation of fibres against one's fingers, the multitude of ways in which they can combine - or refuse to combine - and the variety of sheens, lustres, softness and stiffness all fascinate me. Over decades I have accumulated samples of a wide range of fibres and fabrics and a shelf laden with books and other references on the topic.
