California pesticide use up 10% in 2011

The use of pesticides subject to reporting requirements in the US state of California rose by 9.7% to 192 million lbs (87,090 tonnes) in 2011, according to the latest survey by the California EPA's Department of Pesticide Regulation (DPR). It was a similar increase to that seen in 2010 (Agrow No 631, p 13) and the highest recorded total since 2005. The volume of pesticides for agricultural use rose by 10.7% to 176.9 million lbs, while post-harvest fumigations dropped by a third to 1.4 million lbs.
