Brazilian GM crop adoption fuels growth in Latin America

Brazil again hauled the Latin American adoption of genetically modified crops higher last year, leading global growth as it did so. The country expanded its GM crop coverage more than any other for the third consecutive year. Brazil planted some 36.6 million ha in 2012/13, a 21% increase on the previous year. A national report in Brazil claimed that the use of the technology had boosted Brazilian business to the tune of $6,900 million last year. Most of the benefit came from GM maize adoption, for which there is a wider range of available products in Brazil. That was over a third of the accumulated business benefits the country had enjoyed from GM crops. From 16 years of GM crop adoption, the country had earned almost $19,000 million, while it had resulted in cumulative pesticide usage reduction of some 22,000 tonnes. Over 85% of that cut was in soybean and maize farming.
