In the humid tropics, the deforestation caused by cutting down trees to clear land for cultivation is a major environmental problem. It is aggravated by the fact that the slashed and burned areas are fertile for only a short time, meaning farmers must move on to clear new areas of forest. The problem of deforestation is even more acute when development plans involve wide-scale exploitation of forested areas.
