The work of Wilfred R. Bion A scientific theoretic presentation

In the psychoanalytical discourse the work of Bion has become indispensable. Nevertheless, it is still uncertain how his work should be classified in the psychoanalytical pluralism of theory. He is considered by some as arevolutionary, because he would question established ways of psychoanalytical thinking. Others rejected him, because his work with mathematical and geometrical terminology is difficult to understand. His central concepts, such as container and contained, alpha and beta elements are meanwhile present in all psychoanalytical works; however, this creates the impression that these concepts are used as catchwords without thinking about their philosophical, historical and psychological background. This article elaborates this philosophical historical background of his work. The scientific theoretical concept of Gegenstandsbildung (scientific object formation) forms the scaffold for this investigation. Against this background the following questions are posed on Bion's work: is it possible to appropriately describe something psychic from structures of an ideal geometrical reality? What does it mean for psychoanalysis if it is comprehended as adeductive system? Which image of apsychic reality does he point out with his terminology?
