Mild winter leaves EU crops vulnerable to frost

Crop hardening-a key defence for winter cereals against frost damage-has been delayed across large swathes of the EU because of mild weather, according to the EU's latest Mars bulletin. Bulgaria, Romania and Hungary are particularly vulner-able to frost damage because of unusually high temperatures over the last two months. But there is a similar lack of hard-ening elsewhere in western, southern and central Europe.
