ORGANIZATION OF SEED TESTING LABORATORIES

The subject of seed testing in India was discussed as early as in 1947 by Dent. Fifteen years later a seed testing laboratory was created under the Third Five Year Plan at the Forest Research Institute. The limited objectives of this seed testing laboratory provided for research on germination and storage of tree seeds of India. In the year 1966 the laboratory was recognized as an accredited station for Forest Tree Seeds. In 1971, the President, the Director of Forestry Research and the Officer-ln-charge of Forest Pathology Branch of FRI. were accorded the status of accredited members of the International Seed Testing Association (ISTA). Being an accredited member station of ISTA this seed testing laboratory was authorized to issue International Seed Analysis Certificates after examination of seed samples in accordance with ISTA rules; however at present neither the Laboratory nor any official connected with Seed Testing or the Institute is represented in 1STA.
