The sudden retreat of the US from Syria has drawn a line under the changed geopolitical reality in the Middle East - from one in which the US dominated from a position of unmatched military superiority and aggressive military posturing, to a new era in which military engagement is anathema. How this new reality will fully manifest itself is still unclear, yet one thing is for certain: The US can no longer dictate outcomes in a region where Russian, Iranian and Turkish political and military postures have filled the vacuum created by the US retreat.
