VERTICAL INTEGRATION FOR INCLUSIVE GROWTH OFINDIAN ECONOMY*

I am immensely grateful to the Indian Society of Agriculture Marketing for giving me this opportunity to present my views on Indian agriculture in the 32nd annual conference of Indian Society of Agricultural Marketing.The Indian Government's goal of doubling farmer's incomes is a laudable goal. To design appropriate policies for achieving this goal, it is essential to study what are the sources of growth in agriculture. Dharm Narain had proposed a framework for empirically estimating the sources of growth and had done the related analysis for the time series data on the value of agriculture production prior to 1975.2 The sources of growth continue to be the same even now after four decades, and they are irrigation, land augmenting technological change, and productivity enhancing inputs. I would like to add here vertical integration of the agriculture produce as an additional source of growth for increasing farmer's income along with its linkage with non-farm goods and services in rural areas.
