Nuclear Energy for Enhancing Food, Electricity and Water Security in India - Role of Nuclear Fission Reactors, Nuclear Fuels and Radio-isotope Applications

I am grateful to the Indian Institute of Metals (IIM), particularly to the B E College Shibpur Chapter, for inviting me and giving me the unique opportunity to deliver the 25-Professor A K Seal Memorial Lecture at Kolkata on 20 August 2016. This is indeed a rare honour and I am humbled. Prof. Seal was my "Guru". In my undergraduate years (1963-68) at B. E. College, Shibpur, he was the Head of our Metallurgical Engineering Department and taught us Physical Metallurgy and the Metallurgy of Iron and Steel. Later in 1975, I enrolled myself in B. E. college as an external PhD student from Radio-Metallurgy Division (RMD), Bhabha Atomic Research Centre (BARC), Mumbai. Prof. Seal was the guide for my PhD thesis, titled, "Studies on synthesis and sintering of mixed uranium plutonium monocarbide, mononitride and monocarbonitride , where we selected a unique plutonium rich composition. I received my PhD in 1980.
