There are those who would say that is an outdated title, the industry having come and gone. Certainly the marine component of oil and gas has shrunk dramatically, and the number of boat builders is small compared with the heady days of the 90s. But there is much that is in a healthy state.The rock lobster fishery has had a few hiccups, mainly centred around price. For a halcyon period it was extremely high, encouraging fishermen to lease extra quota at prices that were effectively $55 a kilo per leased pot. When the landed price dropped to not a lot more than that there were loud grumbles. But the truth is that most fishermen are making a very good return on their investments in a well managed fishery, and new boats are being built.
