Stepping outside my comfort zone, I recently attended the International Union of Maritime Insurers (IUMI) conference in Hong Kong. With 632 attendees from 35 countries, this was an eye-opener for me. I found the four-day event most interesting. "A fascinating grip on the whole of the marine industry" The word "union" has a predominantly negative connotation, but this union had a fascinating grip on the whole of the marine industry. From wharves to cargoes, ferries to containerships, and even giant FPSOs, the range of subjects was highly impressive. Each session began with an overview of the politics, the potential, the pros, cons, and the summary risk to insurers.
