Bovine leukosis, caused by bovine leukemia virus (BLV) has a significant negative impact on farm profitability.Controlling BLV is possible with relatively straightforward measures. These measures also have a positive influence on the control of other pathogens.Controlling or even eradicating BLV from the dairy herd will pay for itself through increased milk production and improved longevity.Bovine leukemia virus does not cause disease in humans; however, the general population can view the presence of a 'tumour causing virus' in the dairy population negatively.Bovine leukosis control needs to focus on colostrum management, single use of needles, use of clean palpation gloves, proper dehorning technique and the use of artificial insemination or BLV negative bulls.
