An office worker who dreamed of a life beyond filing cabinets and photocopiers, Helen was taking the Royal Horticultural Society General Certificate in Horticulture when she spotted an advert that stopped her in her tracks. The BBC was seeking applicants for its annual BBC Gardener of the Year competition and, on a whim, Helen decided to try her luck and apply.
