The chemistry of compounds containing heavier Group 14 elements in unusual bonding environments has been a very active area of main-group chemical research for several decades. Because of the importance and ubiquity of organic chemistry, the resultant compounds of the heavier Group 14 elements are often compared to and contrasted with appropriate carbon analogues; however, the structural and chemical properties of many of these compounds are often quite distinct from those of the carbon congeners.
