摘要

Single-molecule magnets (SMMs) are molecules that exhibit slow relaxation of their magnetization of purely molecular origin. This is because SMMs possess high-spin ground states in which spin-orbit coupling results in zero-field splitting of the (25+1)-fold degenerate ground multiplet, which in turn creates a thermal barrier to relaxation of the magnetization that gives rise to magnetic bistability. SMMs form part of a larger family of molecular nanomagnets which are the subject of intense research because of their potential applications in fields as diverse as molecule-based information storage, quantum information processing, spintron-ics, and magnetocaloric refrigeration.
